Alzheimer’s Death Rate Higher in Former NFL Players

Retired pro football players seem to have higher-than-average risks of dying from Alzheimer’s or Lou Gehrig’s disease, U.S. government researchers reported Wednesday. In a study of more than 3,400 retired National Football League (NFL) players, the researchers found that death rates from the two brain diseases were four times higher than those in the general U.S. population. The researchers, from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), cannot be sure of the reasons. READ THE FULL ARTICLE

Tips on How to Plan Ahead for Alzheimer’s Disease

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease include more than memory loss. People with Alzheimer’s have trouble communicating, learning, thinking and reasoning — problems severe enough to have an impact on their work, social activities and family life. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive illness. While the disease affects each person differently, symptoms will gradually worsen and there will be good and bad days. If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it helps to plan ahead. Making simple adjustments, taking safety precautions, putting plans for the future in place and having the support of others can make things easier. READ THE FULL ARTICLE

Yoga Reduces Stress Levels for Caregivers of Alzheimer’s Patients

Six months ago, researchers at UCLA published a study that showed using a specific type of yoga to engage in a brief, simple daily meditation reduced the stress levels of people who care for those stricken by Alzheimer’s and dementia. As previously reported, practicing a certain form of chanting yogic meditation for just 12 minutes daily for eight weeks led to a reduction in the biological mechanisms responsible for an increase in the immune system’s inflammation response. Inflammation, if constantly activated, can contribute to a multitude of chronic health problems. READ THE FULL ARTICLE

Eating Junk Food May Put You at Risk of Developing Dementia

Gorging on junk food may not just make you fat – it could also give you dementia. Evidence is growing that a bad diet triggers Alzheimer’s by poisoning the brain. With studies on animals strongly implicating the hormone insulin in the process, some believe Alzheimer’s to be another version of diabetes. Bizarre as the claim may seem, confirming the link could speed the search for desperately needed new treatments for Alzheimer’s, which, along with other forms of dementia, affects more than 800,000 Britons. Treatment Options For People With Alzheimer’s Disease

There are more than 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, a form of dementia, and it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s live an average of eight years after being diagnosed, though some survive up to 20 years depending on their age and other health conditions. There are treatments to slow the progressive symptoms and improve quality of life — which is important for the person with Alzheimer’s as well as their loved ones and caregivers — but there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
